RDI

by Betteg, Feb 21, 2008 08:03AM
My 4-yr-old grandson, Ethan, is autistic. (I take care of him during the day.)  He's had ABA instruction for two years now, and we recently have learned about RDI (Relationship Development Intervention).   We're very enthusiastic about this program as it seems to provide the social aspect which is missing in ABA.  His ABA therapist is learning along with us.  My question is:  Have any of you parents/caregivers had experience with this program, and if so, what are your opinions?

I've been providing ABA services for several years and I can honestly say that I think that RDI is great.  You are absolutely right in thinking that it provides a social aspect that ABA can miss.  I do, however believe (very strongly) that a history of ABA (compliance, following instructions, imitation skills) is helpful when starting an RDI program.

I work with several children who receive both ABA and RDI and are doing well.  It is important that your therapists work together, which seems to be the case with you.

Thank you so much for the feedback!  We are so hopeful about this program, and it's wonderful to get a positive response.
