Misdiagnosed for Herpes

by sarah212, Feb 23, 2008 07:27PM
I have had several vaginal infections and yeast infections for 6 months now, ever since my honeymoon to Mexico City.  I first started feeling pain during intercourse, it was a horrible burning sensation and made sex almost unbearable.  I also felt pain after intercourse when my husband would ejaculate inside me.  It was the same burning sensation.  I went to the doctor to get it checked out and I was told I had probably gotten a bacterial infection on my trip to Mexico City.  She gave me medication, which I started taking, but a few days later I noticed a sore in my vaginal area.  My husband has genital herpes and I do not, so I decided to go to the doctor thinking that might be the problem.  She looked at my vaginal area and said that she didn't think I had herpes.  After that I had several yeast infections and I still did not feel fully comfortable having sex.  It's now gotten to the point that I never want to have sex b/c of the pain.  I had my annual 2 weeks ago (it's been about 5 months since I went to the gyno for that first infection) and my doctor told me I had yet again another yeast infection.  I also decided to get a blood test for herpes and I took a vaccine for HPV (my husband has both).  I started taking medication for the yeast infection, but about a week later I noticed this open sore on my vagina.  By the next day it looked like a ulcer, so I decided to go in.  I had to see a different doctor b/c mine was out, and he said that my sore looked like herpes.  He did a swab test and put me on a 10-day dose of Valtrex.  The next day I noticed a red outline of bumps around my rectum.  But, after a few days of the Valtrex my sores started to clear up.  It's been about a week since the doctor told me I had herpes, but today I got a letter from my original doctor telling me that my blood test came back negative for herpes and HPV.  I should be relieved, but I'm not b/c I really want to know what's wrong with me.  I'm confused why I'm having so much pain during intercourse and why I'm having so many yeast infections.  Is there another infection or disease that I might have?

If I was in your position, I would have a discussion with your first doctor about the swab test. Your first doctor gave you a blood test for HSV and the second did a swab test taken directly from the ulcer. The swab test may be a more reliable indicator of HSV in your case.

Get your swab test results. If they are positive, you have Herpes. If they are negative, you may or may not have Herpes.

Herpes blood tests can be also be tricky. You should make sure that you received (or receive) a HerpesSelect test. Ask for it by that name. (It is a specific type of test.)

Get both your HSV1 and HSV2 test results. There are 2 different viruses that can cause herpetic infections.

This test can sometimes take 4 months past initial infection to be positive.

You should also get your husbands results.

Also, is your husband using Valtrex and or condoms?

If its a new herpes infection for you, then it might not show up in your blood yet.  As was stated already, it can take up to about 4 months to test positive on a blood test.

Also, there isn't a blood test for HPV.

If you are getting chronic yeast, you might ask your doc for some diflucan, and take that weekly for a few weeks.  Its sometimes hard to break the yeast cycle, and your hubby might also want to be treated.  Its possible that you are just passing it back and forth.

Oh and if all of this is because of herpes, you might want to consider suppression, which is taking an antiviral, like valtrex or acyclovir, every day.

That might help this a lot.

Does your hubby currently have hpv symptoms?  How long has it been since he's had it?  If its been longer than 2 years without symptoms, you can assume he is no longer infectious.

hi, my names sarah too :D*

anyway,
a comment about your yeast infections etc., like it was said before it is possible and MOST LIKELY that you and your husband are just passing it back and fourth so HE should get checked out. And even having intercourse with "unclean" genitals(i mean unclean like not washed properly) can lead to bladder/yeast infections aswell. I have had the burning/itching sensation during and after sex (but more during, oh how it hurt) aswell like half a year ago but it went away from constantly using those Vagisil wipes and making sure my man and I wash ourselves before and after intercourse so up to this day, no yeast infections.

yea, those Vagisil wipes work**
