Progressive weakness

by danfred, Feb 23, 2008 11:38PM
About a year ago my forefinger in my left hand began twitching sideways occasionaly.  At some point my fingers began feeling funny.  I would not exactly call it "stiff" but occassionaly they would not be able to do fine motor skills (clicking my nails together, holding something like a pencil or something small) occasionally was difficult.  Now the weekness and clumsiness in my left hand has become constant... I can't control it.  I have not lost use of my left hand, but am definitely compensating for it's lack of coordination. There is also  a feeling of heaviness in that hand.
I also had severe muscle spasms.  I have had Lap Band Surgery recently and consequently am taking B-12 regularly.  Since that time the severe muscle cramps/spasms have noticeably decreased, but they were so bad that I couldn't stretch or point my toes. (I don't know if that is relavant, but...)
I'm a 45 year old female, menopausal (hyst 1 year ago).  Is ALS out of the question due to my age and the fact that I'm a female?  What about Parkinsons disease?  Is there a test that is definitive for either one of those?
Any input would be appreciated.  I've read a lot of posts about the subject but felt compelled to write.
Thankyou
