As I have been diagnosed with the above by a Nurologist what treatment would be advised?

I have been having severe progressive lower limb wasting and weakness with pain since January 2007.

Is a steriod treatment an option by my Nurologist?

I think this question is best addressed by your Neurologist who has treated many individuals with this disorder. i am sorry i could not be of more assistance to you in this regard.
