mother of a 13 month old child recently diagnosed with cerebral palsy and new born hearing loss

Hi

I am a mother of a 13 month old child recently diagnosed with cerebral palsy and new born hearing loss. At birth we were told that she has hearing loss as if that wasn't enough to deal with. Now 13 months later she is diagnosed with spastic cerebral palsy.

My daughter was delivered by c-section. Then she was placed in a regular nursery. She was only 4 pounds 12 ounces. Low birth weight but healthy, so they said. She wasn't eating much like every other child. She also wasn't sucking very well. The next day my doctor called me on the phone and said I didn't want to scare you yesterday but, the babies heart rate dropped during the delivery but the she was fine. I didn't think anything of it at the time but, now I am beginning to think why was she placed into a regular nursery? Shouldn't she have been monitored? We weren't thinking any of this until now.  A lot of thought are running threw my head now that we got a diagnose of cerebral palsy. Was anyone at fault? Did it happen in uterus? What happened to my baby? Is she going to be able to walk and talk?

At this point she doesn't sit walk of talk (not even babble). She just recently started to roll one way. Was never able to tolerated her stomach. She still has poor sucking. She had acid reflux from about 2 months old with noisy breathing.

My child receives speech, pt, OT, special Ed and we are waiting for visual therapy. She can see fine from what the ophthalmologist told us but she can benefit from visual therapy. Is this heard of? My daughter tends to look past you or above you instead of looking at your eyes or mouth. Is this a tracking problem or should I seek better medical attention?

Anyone have any advise for me? I am a desperate mother looking for answers. I want my child to get the best care possible to help her to the best of my ability live a normal life.

Thanx for everyone's time!

Sounds like you got it under control....better then I did years ago...You sound like you have all the doctors and therapies going on.....They hate that belly time.....I hate to sound like a broken record...but if you think there could of been fowl play during delivery....you can consult a lawyer...My daughter is ten so I'm past the early intervention days...You can get alot info from your therapists....I have a great Physiatrist that my daughter sees and is very up to date on things for her....he gives me hope....best of luck

I would def. recommend vision thereapy. My 15 month old has been getting it for about 7 months and she is finally focusing and folowing objects. Her vision impairment is due to brain damage caused by meningitis. You can never have enough therapy. It really works! My daughter was perfectly normal at birth. When she was 6 months old she contracted bacterial meningitis. Since then she has had hearing loss, a stroke, seizures, Cerebral Palsy, and vision issues. She is also on a feeding pump due to silent aspiration and un able to suck from a bottle (altho she has started taking food by spoon !)

My daughter had a vision test done by placing electrodes to her head and she wore goggles that had blinking lights. This determined if the msg was getting from the nerve to the brain. I would rec. this. Also, are you  seeing a neurological opthamologist?

take care
