Has anyone heard this??

by Grandmatobe, Feb 25, 2008 03:03PM
My daughter was told by a friend that if a baby is born during its 6th month, it has a better chance of surviving than if it was born in the 7th month.  That doesn't make sense to me at all....

Has anyone ever heard of this?  Is there some type of development during the 7th month that would put the baby at risk over being born at, let's say, the 6th or 8th month?

nevr heard of that before....that do make no sence because the baby would be more develpoed in the 7 mth and any baby born b4 8 and a half months i beleve is at risk!!

I think thats crazy! I wouldnt listen to it...the more time that baby has to live in the mother the more of a chance there is to survive.  I hope you dont listen to that.

I have never heard of that either. The baby's lungs would be more developed in the 7th month than they would be in the 6th month. the baby is also bigger and would be beginning to put fat on in the 7th-8th month. The further along you are, the better your chances.

Yes, I've heard something like that too, how in the 6th month it's okay but 7th it's not, then 8th month is okay, and 9th is not. It's weird, but I don't buy it.

Nope never heard of that.  You have the baby's weight issue being born that early as well as the underdeveloped lungs.  I say that sounds wacky to me!

I work in a newborn ICU where we have preemies all the time.  The closer the baby is to term the better the chances of survival are better.

I am glad to hear that this couldn't possibly have any validation to it.... I couldn't imagine that having 4 extra weeks in the womb would generate more problems than not.  It seemed unbelievable and I guess my gut was right.

Well, that is good to know, as my daughter is 27 weeks along and entering that timeframe.  Thank you very much for your insight!!

Why would a baby born in the 7th month have better chances of surviving than a baby born in the 8th month?
