Bone cancer sugery

by goldy_locks, Feb 25, 2008 03:52PM
In September my 20 year old boyfriend found out he had bone cancer in his knee. The sugery that was preformed involved his whole knee being removed, his tibia was also removed and connected to his femur and then a titaium rod replaced where the tibia had been. The surgery took almost 15 hours to complete and he won't be fully recovered for a year. He is know home from the hospital and getting a fairly depressed with everything that has happened. Just before the sugery we found out that this exact sugery had never been done before and he would be a big help for cancer research. The only problem is that he can't seem to find anyone with a similar surgery to consult with and learn how he will cope with this major change. If anyone knows of somewhere that he could find some helpfull information it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi.  I think it would be helpful if you can post the name of the surgical procedure (as well as other details) done to your boyfriend. Someone in the forum might be able to direct you to other people who have undergone such a procedure, but we need to know what it is first.  If you can get the record of the operative technique, maybe you can post it in this forum so we can give you a better answer.

He has no idea what the name of the surgical procedure was. It was preformed by a orthopedic surgeon and plastic surgeon. It also involved cadaver bone to fuse the tibia and the femur together.
