Post hernia repair epididymitis

by Billybobdanbob, Feb 25, 2008 04:35PM
After a bilateral inguinal hernia repair, I experienced onset of swelling and excruciating pain in my left testicle, and along the spermatic cord.    I was assessed in an emergency, and given an ultrasound, diagnosed with epidiymitis and given a course of antibiotics for 7 days. The Pain and swelling returned and I was given another 7 day course of antibiotics (Cipro, both times).  It is now about 6 weeks post op. and I am still having acute discomfort.  The hernia repair was performed laparoscopically, and the left side was and indirect hernia requiring significant dissection of the spermatic cord.  I have been seen by a urologist and he gave a differential diagnosis of inflammatory epididymitis and varicocele.  He recommended I stop using the antibiotics, and prescribed a course of anti-inflammatories.   2 weeks later with slowing increasing levels of pain, my family doctor recommended I start on antibiotics  again, this time for a minimum of 2 weeks up to a maximum of 4.
My questions are:
1)  Why am I in so much pain a month and a half after my surgery?
2)  Blood tests have all come back negative for elevated wbc,  should I listen to my family doc and keep taking the antibiotics?
3) Should I seek counsel from another urologist?
4)Should I just sit back and wait for this to get better?
Thank you for any advice you can give me in this matter.

Hi,

The pain may be due to inflammation or  congestion of the involved structures. If there is an underlying infection, then one will expect that the pain will  persist a little longer than is expected.

I suggest you continue taking the medications. Observe your condition. Ask your physician what you need to expect post surgery in terms of recovery , sexual function and lifestyle changes. If it will help you allay your worries and concerns, a second opinion will always be welcome to shed some light on your condition.
