asymptomatic for 20 years

by running_girl, Feb 26, 2008 11:58AM
I just received a positive IgG test (and retest) for HSV-2. (5.2)  It appears that I have had asymptomatic Herpes for 20 years!  During all this time I have had unprotected sex with my husband and he's just tested negative.  Does this even sound possible?  I'm pretty shaken by this news, and don't know if I should start taking suppressive therapy or not.  Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks!

Out of  curiosity - what made you get tested?

So suppressive therapy or not - that is the question.  That's totally your call. If you've not had problems with anything in your genital area all this time and you and your  man realize that if you went 20 years without transmitting it odds are good that you are doing something right - then why bother?  If you both feel that perhaps you've tempted fate long enough over the last 20 years and you want to be proactive in protecting him then yes suppressive therapy might be a good option for you.

I recommend you both take the time to read the herpes handbook at www.westoverheights.com and decide together if you feel that suppressive therapy is the right choice for you.  Your herpes won't get "worse" or anything like that if you don't treat it.  Treating it just helps to speed the healing of lesions and if taken suppressively it helps to reduce the chances of transmitting to a partner.

feel free to ask any other questions you might have too :)

I suspected my partner of cheating and had an entire STD panel run. I was the only one with a positive result.  Thanks for your response.
