Help - high ANA

by JillthePill77, Feb 26, 2008 12:24PM
My ANA titer came back 1:1280.  My doctor kept saying that it was a really high reading.  The pattern is centromere.  They are doing the liver biopsy next week.  What I'm wondering is how high this reading is?  My doctor suspects auto-immune hepatitus and after reading the symptoms, I do too.  It's very scary,  Is there an alternative to cortisone?  I really don't want to take it.  I'm bipolar and it's really NOT good for bipolar people.

Hi there,

Your reading is very high. Anything over 1:160 is indicative of an autoimmune disorder. ANA titer is always doubled, so the next result would be 1:320, then 1:640, etc. In doing my research, it looks as though the centromere pattern is seen in PSS with CREST syndrom. Did your doctor talk to you about what he feels you may have? Can you tell me what other symptoms you are having?

I don't have any PSS or CREST symptoms, just abdonimal pain, dark urine, and clay-colored stools.  I've read that they've been finding a lot of Cenromere patterns without CREST and that makes me very happy.  Autoimmune Hepatitus seems like the most likely diagnosis at this time.  My Liver Biopsy is Thursday, so keep me in yor thoughts!
