Hi i have an underactive thyroid and am suppose to take 175mcg thyroxine daily to stabalize it . however i was diagnosed when i was 12 and i am now 24 an maybey out of the 12 years with this problem i have taken my medication for 2 years. i dont know why i just seem to resent taki9ng it evberday. however i have been worrying that maybey this has been dangerous . i have a goitre . that is not going away even thjough i am now taking me medication. i am worried that this may be a problem as although it is not painfull sometimes it feel that their is pressure and i find it difficult to swallow. my astma is worse and i am finding that i feel throte is impeding my breathing i can not feelany lumps in my throte however the thyroid which i know is butterfly shaped feels much larger but not sore. and i can move it around in my necy side to side when i doit feels like it rubbing against something . should i be worried their may be cancer or am i just needing paranoid. due to my own stupidity

Hi,

Taking the supplementary hormones is not likely going to produce a cancer. On the contrary,  thyroid hormones have been tried  for thyroid nodules and  do seem to reduce its size, but the overall benefit obtained from this is questionable.
it would be important to see a doctor and find out if your thyroid is still underfunctioning. Most of the time the underfunctioning is not apparent but it becomes a problem in the presence of another problem, like an infection or trauma. Best to know, than to be surprised.
