I failed my Thyroid Uptake!

by justjanna, Feb 26, 2008 06:37PM
I had an ultrasound that showed a heterogeneous echo pattern in my right lobe w/ a 2.5 cm nodule.  My doctor ordered a Thyroid Uptake and Scan.  The results state, "the images demonstrate minimal thyroid uptake bilaterally.  There is no evidence of a dominant hot lobe.'

So what the heck does that mean?  My doc is out of town; the radiologist told me that the pictures couldn't really show anything (i.e., hot vs. cold) because my thyroid didn't 'uptake' the radioactive iodine ... I swallowed a capsule and was injected.

What does that mean when you 'fail' to uptake the iodine???

Thanks for any insight you can offer!!

You are going to have to talk to your doctor for sure but I think it means that the "mass" in your right lobe is not made up of thyroid tissue - meaning it shouldn't be there.  It looks like your thyroid may be pretty much non-functioning too.   Not an endo or a radiologist but that's my take on it.

The next step would probably be a PET scan.

Thanks for the advice .... I've tried to access the website you posted, but so far without any luck!  I'll keep trying!

Would a FNA be something to consider 'next,' too???

I thought I'd add that my TSH is 0.8 and my antibodies are negative.  Not sure what that means either!!!!
I am impressed at the knowledge on this board .... !!  Thanks for sharing!
