can vagus nerve cause GI problems?

Everytime my husband eats, he coughs, chokes, till I get the food out. He has been diagnosed with vagus sycopy. But it seems to be getting worse. Also, can this cause diareah? Sometimes he looses concieness for a few seconds., during his "spell". Anytime he eats ANYTHING (just a bite0 he goes to sleep. he never used to do that.Is the vagus nerve causing this?
