Major stomach spasm pain

by MJmini, Feb 27, 2008 08:43AM
On Monday night I went into the ER with unbelievable pain (almost as bad as labor pains) in my upper stomach area.  They felt like spasms and was mostly contant, but seemed to strenthen in "waves" at times.  I would also have alternating spasms at the top of my left shoulder, which seemed to follow with the stomach pains.  I thought it was reflux at first, so I tried maylox, tums, zantac, and pepcid ac.  Nothing helped so I reluctantly went into the ER.  I am 15 weeks pregnant, so I was also worried about the baby, yet I didn't think it could be the baby because the pain was much higher then where the baby is, but I went in just to make sure and because I couldn't take the pain anymore.  When I got in (after 3 hours of waiting in agony-not fun!) I had a full abdominal utlrasound done.  They were thinking it might be my gull bladder, but weren't sure.  They also gave me some reflux meds, but none of them seemed to help.  One was in IV form (which I can't remember the name of!) The other was liquid maylox. The ultrasound showed nothing abnormal and the baby looked great.  They were going to keep my in the hospital to monitor my pain.  It wasn't untill my OB came in a bit later that I found out that it could possibly be the vaga nerve, which she says runs from your stomach area up to your left shoulder.  No other doctor or nurse has mentioned that to me.  Aftter that, I tried to massage the area and rest for about an hour.  The pain eventually subsided and I was able to go home later that day.  I am wondering what causes that pain and how can I aviod it in the future?

The pain could be from gallbladder (ultrasound can miss a lot of gb diseases, **HIDA scan** is much more accurate - they inject a contrast substance into your vein and then monitor its uptake and release from the liver and gallbladder). **Colic pain (spasm)** after the fatty meal, nause, occasional vomiting or diarrhea speak for gb.

Pain could be from the stomach, or from intestinal obstruction from some reason.
