should I get a second opinion

by deslinger5, Feb 27, 2008 09:09AM
I fell on Monday and hurt my ankle.  I went to the emergency room because I felt something pop and I was in a lot of pain.  They took x-rays and said that it wasn't broken but is it possible that the x-ray didn't show the break and it is broken?  My foot and ankle are still very swollen and painful and it has been over 48 hours and I have had it elevated, iced, and have taken ibuprofen and nothing has helped.  Should I go back to the same doctor or see a new doctor?  Or do I just need to give it more time.  I need to get this taken care of so I can go back to work.

You should see another physician, preferably one with experience with athletic injuries. The key to recovery with ankle injuries is to immediately take action to prevent swelling, either by an elastomeric circumferental wrap, cold compresses and anti-inflammatories. Once there is swelling these treatments are far less effective. Warm water is a no-no. There is cartiligenous material that can be damaged as wekk as tendons to rupture. My personal preference, if mobility is a job-related issue, is to see a sports injury specialist. They are really up to date on both treatment of ankle injuries and rehab. It seems the first physician was not taking you seriously enough. I would forgive him, but at this point you really need to see someone who knows what they are doing.
