Pyometra's

I have a pot belly pig, who we think has a pyometra.  Discharge from vulva, lethargic, not eating.  The Vet said he could do a uterine tap to find out.  That to me sounds dangerous.  Sticking a needle into a puss filled uterus, I am afraid she could then get a sestemic infection from the needle contanimation.  What do you think?

Pyometra in a pot belly pig is similar to pyometra in dogs and can be life-threatening.

Is your vet unsure that it is a pyometra?  Has an abdominal X-Ray or ultrasound been performed on you pig?  These would be safer diagnostic procedures.

I think that it is very important to get an accurate diagnosis as fast as possible so that appropriate treatment can be instituted.

If it does turn out to be pyometra she probably needs in-hospital treatment and you really need to consider having her spayed once she is strong enough.

I encourage owners to have their pot bellied pigs spayed if they are not going to be bred since they can encounter the same problems as dogs who are unspayed such as cancers and pyometra.
