cyst or irregular tissue

by Rufus59, Feb 27, 2008 08:17PM
I am 48, have a very firm 2cm lump in the right breaast, went for a diagnostic mamogram which showed areas of concerns (a large white area), then an ultrasound of both breast and while the technician was imaging the left breast she showed me an area that she said was a 4cm cyst,  I don't feel anything on the left breast (asuming because it is fluid filled). The technician then said that the lump on the right breast is also a cyst, my question is that I have had two lumps removed in the past that the ultrasound showed were cyst, that ended up being solid tissue (hyperplasia); how can you tell on an ultrasound if the image is a cyst or tissue?

The Radiologist can usually differentiate between the two BUT only a biopsy can tell for sure. I know the US Tech.s do this day after day but I would prefer the Radiologists opinion which you ordinarily get "on the spot" when you have an Ultrasound.

Hi,

Ultrasound is a machine which uses the principle of reflection of high frequency waves from objects, pretty much similar to what is used in submarines or by bats. The reflection ascertains whether the tissue is solid or liquid as in the case of lumps or cysts by the use of this mechanism based on the objects echogenecity.

Let us know if you have any other queries.

Regards.
