Can't get a straight answer from my OB

by Mommy2Tay_Cal, Feb 28, 2008 11:50AM
I am scheduled to have a C section next Wednesday. It was not my first choice by no means but there is concern that I can't handle a natural birth without risk. I had a very difficult delivery with my little girl lost lots of blood, had to have a tranfusion, eneded up with 47 stiches and a pretty serious infection afterwards. So...we opted for a C section this go round. Anyway, my question is...Does anyone know what the risks are if I go into labor on my own before the section next week? I have been having contractions for weeks now but they seem to be getting much more intense the last few days, plus starting to feel a lot of pressure which is new for me (never happened with my daughter). I have asked my OB and her response each time is "it's very unlikely for you to go into labor before 39  weeks and we have you scheduled for 38 and 2 days" That tells me exactly squat! Please help if you have any advice.

If this helps, I went into natural labor with both babies and had c-sections because of baby size. Neither c-section was a rushed emergency because my labors do not go quickly. With the 2nd, my water broke at home but I was only having very mild contractions, so had plenty of time to get to the hospital to have the c-section. Best wishes!

That's funny, I was having contractions from somewhere around week 35 and the doc kept sending me to the OB unit to get a shot of Brethane (sp?) to stop the contractions.  We did this for 3 weeks straight and my induction was scheduled at the end of 38 weeks, basically 39 weeks.  And I didn't know I was having contractions!

Have they not checked you for contractions?

BTW...my induction became and emergency c-section when we found out she was breach.  Not a big deal, really, just not prepared for it.

i too had a scheduled c section planned with my son 2 1/2 years ago...my doc said the same thing...needless to say i went into labor a couple weeks before scheduled c section. i live about an hour away from the hospital my doc delivers from....and i called him in the middle of the night feeling preasure and felt like i had to go to the bathroom...he said i was constipated and probably needed an enema...lol...i felt contractions but they were minutes apart...well i got in the car with dh to go the hospital and with in 5 minutes i was having full blown contractions...when i got to the hospital i was in active labor...screaming...lol...eventually they gave me drugs to do the c section. oh and by the way....before i called the doc dh and i looked in the book to see if i was in labor and pretty much no symptoms matched up. so my advice is listen to your body...and act on it....here i thought i was having a sceduled c section and wouldnt go in to labor ahead of time...i also lost a lot of blood and needed 3 transfusions...so you just never know....

Ya'll make me glad I never knew I was having contractions and never actually had any type of labor.  I was induced and they broke my water at 3 dilation and immediately took me to have the c-section.  NEVER felt anything, of course I was still asleep from the, oh what's one of those nice sleeping pills they are pushing now??????...brain just died on me..... anyway, never knew really what was going on because I was a little dopey from the sleeping pill.

To Mommy:  If you even think you are having contractions, get to your hospital and ask them to hook you up to the monitors, better safe (and irritate the nurses) than go through tricia's scenario.

Now I am freaked a bit after reading Tricia's story...Scary!! I called my doc and told her what I feeling and she said for me to go in if I even think I may be in active labor. Thanks for the help.

lhughes: I think I might agree on the not knowing before hand...it has got my tummy in knots with worry.
