Epididymitis and Orchitis

by bill8686, Feb 28, 2008 05:24PM
I have had a heck of a time with Epididymitis and now Orchitis over the last 6 months.  Here's what's happened to me.  Any treatment suggestions would be most appreciated:

9/22/07 hospitalized for epididymitis and orchitis-intense pain in lower abdomen, thought I was having appendicitis, given a scrotal ultrasound, possible cyst on epipdidymis.  Left testicle had swollen up twice the size of right.  Given dilotin, antibiotics, and percoset

Approx. 10/10-Two week’s later-infection seemed to be clearing up, visited Dr. and he gave me four more days of antibiotics

10/17-Three week’s later infection seemed to be coming back so I was prescribed cipro and vicodin and celebrex

11/7-Six weeks later infection never cleared up, swelling was down but still had intense pain in testicles, referred to another Dr, had second scrotal ultrasound

Prescribed levaquin and more vicoden and celebrex

Around 11/20 Met with Dr. again and told me the epididmytis is clearing up

12/6/07 Met with Dr. for 3rd time, give me injections of lidocaine which stopped pain for 3-5 days then pain returned.  Finally some pain relief but only for 3-5 days.

Another Dr. examined me and agreed with first Dr. that I should have an epididydectomy

1/22/08-Had epididydectomy and was sore and sick from anseisthia and surgery for 3-5 days after surgery.

1/29/08 starting to feel better felt I was on the road to recovery

2/4/08 started feeling worse, testicle swelling up and in bad pain.  Immediately stopped walking and doing any physical activity.  Having trouble sleeping and concentrating on work due to pain.

2/20/08 Pain continues, first Dr. wants to see me but I decide to go try another Dr. I just want to get better and move on with my life.

2/23 Given a steroid injection in the sore testicle.  I feel fine for 36 hours then testicle hurts more than ever….

My left testicle continues to ache
My lower abdomen is tender
Pain gets worse with more activity
I have to take 2-3 vicodin or oxycodone to deal with pain.
Icing my testicles a lot.
Warm baths seem to help.
My appetite seems to be down, not hungry for most of the day.
Upset stomach some days, drinking lots of tomato juice to sooth my stomach
Hurts like heck to urinate now and when my bladder gets full have to find a restroom asap.  Do I have a bladder infection now?
My father was a condition called in Interstitial Cystitis (bladder infection)-is this related to my problem
My hands and feet are usually very cold, is poor circulation due to meds?

What can I do to get better?  I have not really exercised in 5 months.
I have a stressful sales job and not exercising is a problem.
Should I not have sex with my wife?  Our sex frequency is way down.  We have only had sex 3-4 times since this infection.
Do I have a prostate problem?
I generally feel sick and not 100%.  Still able to work everyday but usually exhausted by bed time.  Not sleeping soundly and have to get up 2-3 times a night to urinate.

Thank you!

Hi.

The diagnosis of an  epididymitis and orchitis have been given and your epididymitis have been managed well. Infections in these structures may recur and an underlying prostate involvement should also be considered. The pain may still be due to an ongoing infection and this may persist for quite sometime as infections may recur and may not readily respond to the antibiotics.

At this point, a prostate involvement should also be ruled out. You may discuss this with your physician so that you may be further evaluated along this line. A prostate secretion culture and digital rectal examination may be necessary. There is such a condition called prostatodynia which may refer to a chronic pelvic pain .This condition can preset with debilitating pain for some. In your case, this is one differential.
