Wheat or Gluten???

Is a wheat allergy and gluten/celiacs disease much the same???? and are the symptoms the same??? Please someone let me know if the treatment is the same diet etc, Im so mixed up with it all and find it really difficult to get information here in Scotland... I dont know what to eat and what not to eat!! ............Can I eat oats??? for example............... Thank you ........... fraserjean

Yes they are the same.  If you are suffering you must stay away from any wheat, barley or rye product.  You can eat oats but they must be "certified" gluten free which means purchasing them from a health food store...if you have those in Scotland.  If not just search "gluten free oats" and you will get some good results.  Below is a link listing all the foods we are unable to eat.

They are similar in that you must avoid wheat products, which contain gluten.  But they are not the same in the response they evoke from your body.  A wheat allergy is exactly, that, an allergy, release of histamines, body rejects...

Celiacs is an autoimmune response more than an allergy; your body sees gluten as foreign and attacks it.

They do not have the same response and they can have different symptoms.
