STD or UTI

I have just finished a 5 day course of Cipro prescribed over the phone by an oncall physician last weekend for a UTI. I had a non-specific UTI about 4 years ago. It was not gonorrhea or chlamydia as determined by my urologist.

My main symptom this time, however, is not discharge or burning as it was last time. It is a feeling of fullness in my bladder. Could this be the medication causing this? I have a follow up this week.

I am in a committed relationship but did receive oral sex with someone other than my partner for only about 15-30 seconds before guilt took over. My question is: Could this be an infection that would require an antibiotic other than Cipro? Am I overanalyzing this?

It might be normal next week, given the use of antibiotics - tough to tell.

You might have gotten something called NGU from oral sex.  NGU is a non-specific infection in the urethra, and sometimes normal mouth bacteria can cause this.  Taking 1gm of zithromax at one time, once, should cure it.

Have the doc do a urine test anyway, and go from there.

Thanks for the information. They had asked me to do a clean catch urine sample and then bring it in Monday, but I used a 24 hour pharmacy that didn't have sterile cups. They advised to continue this anitbiotic and let it run its course and then follow up (this coming week). I just know that UTIs are uncommon in young men, but I am almost 100% monogamous as I mentioned above. I am just wondering if my infection is one that requires a z-pac rather than cipro. and will my urinalysis seem "ok" next week because I have been on antibiotics this week?

UTIs can be very stubborn and may lead to bladder and or kidney infections. Being prescribed meds over the phone without having a urine culture done was not really a good idea, surprised the doctor did that. While waiting for appointment drink plenty of fluids, avoid caffeine, acid foods and drinks.
