sperm morphology

by fiona1983, Feb 29, 2008 04:47PM
my husband and i live in the uk and have been trying for our 2nd baby for over 2 years and have undergone fertility testing.
Our specialist gave us these results for my husbands sperm :
39 million - count
50% - motile
3% normal morphology (97% abnormal)

the specialist sais that there is only a small chance of us acheiving a pregnancy and IVF would be a good route.

unfortunatly the UK wont allow us to have IVF on the NHS so we have to pay for that if and when we can afford it.

My question is : What is the likleyhood of us acheiving a pregnancy naturally, given that we have had 1 before and is there any methods that might help my husband increase his normal morphology levels?

Many thanks
Fiona

My husband had the same problem with about the same percentage.  We got pregnant thru our first try with IUI.  I would try that route before IVF

Hi Fiona, sorry to hear that dear. My hubby has about the same abnormal morphology, 95-97%. However, motility and count were found to be excellent. We have also been TTC'ing for a year and half without success. However, I should mention that I have been diagnosed with low egg quality:(( Anyway, we did try 3 IUIs before moving on to IVF. Don't be discouraged by this, I've read many other success stories where they conceived naturally with poor sperm morphology.

Also, did they assay the morphology using strict criteria? That's very imp. Also, have you undergone any tests to see if you're completely fertile? Like blood tests for hormone levels, HSG test for blocked fallopian tubes etc? How old are you and DH? I'm 30, DH is 34. Wishing you all the very best for your endeavors:))

Best,
Julie

What are your fertility tests? The sperm analysis suggests only IUI, this sperm is also good for timed intercourse if the viscosity is not high. Don't rush IVF. I would suggest IUI+injectables.

To: everyone
i am 24 years old and dh is 39.
we both had tests done including a hsg, which all are fine for me.
my cycle is slightly irregular by 2 days (between 26 and 28 day cycle) but apart from that, i have no issues.
DH has the above issues and they didnt say if there was any strict criteria for mophology, so im not sure.
they have basically told us because we have a child together, they cannot help us and if we chose to go private to contact them.

I puts me into an emotional wreck where i just want to cry.
i cant see why you can have 2 children with your partner in bristol and be treated on nhs but in cornwall you cant have any children - this postcode lottery s so unfair.

since Dh and i cannot afford ivf and icsi we are gonn akeep trying with mulit-vits as advised and hope that one day we can have another child.

We just had my dh SA results, and he had similar when it comes to morphology, 2% normal, we are going to repeat the test (just to make sure!). But we are going to try IUI first as well. I've also wandered if anyone else has concieved thru IUI with this situation.
Ours was done with the strict morphology, can anyone tell me what that means??   Thanks! and good luck!
