Testing after miscarriages

Dear Doctor,

After suffering a miscarriage in 2006, we decided to see an RE in the beginning of 2007. I was monitored for one cycle, and ovulated on my own, so we did four unmedicated cycles of IUI, but didn't get pregnant. I also had an HSG that confirmed open tubes, plus hormone tests on CD9 of the first month, which were all normal. After our insurance changed (we no longer had fertility coverage...not even for diagnostic tests), we took a break, and got pregnant on our own in July. That ended in another miscarriage in September. My regular obgyn suggested maybe going back to the RE for additional testing, so I just had an appointment today. This is what my RE said:

1. My hormone tests from last year on CD 9 showed normal levels for E2, FSH, TSH, LH and prolactin.
2. There's no need for additional tests (except MAYBE a laparoscopy, if we really want to).
3. The next step would be either IUI with injectables (will cost us about $3,500 to $4,000) or IVF with Injectibles (about $10,000 to $12,500).

So my question to you is: Do you agree with these recommendations? I thought there were several tests that could be done after suffering more than one pregnancy loss. My RE didn't seem concerned and simply wanted me to start doing IUIs or IVF. By the way, I already know I have Factor V Leiden (from a blood panel I had done years ago, unrelated to fertility treatment).

The costs of these procedures are high, and I'm worried about spending all this money on an IVF, for example, and then IF I get pregnant, face the possibility of another miscarriage.

Any thoughts? Should I get a second opinion from another RE?

I'm sorry this is so long. Thanks in advance for your help!

Heather
