FNA

by Evora, Feb 29, 2008 08:20PM
I am confused...my mom surgeon says that she is going to do a mastectomy and take a chunk of axillary nodes but no sentnels because she is taking the whole breast off.  We went for a second opinion and they preformed a FNA of the nodes but not the sentanels......I am reading that its the sentanels that are accurate in detecting speading of cancer to other parts of the body....Should I push for sentanels or are they going about this the correct the way...

Her stats are:
diagnosed 1-08
triple negative
invasive ductal
7:00 postions up aganist the chest wall
77 yrs of age

They usually do a sentinal node bx when a lumpectomy is done. The procedure you describe sounds correct .. that is what I had done .. the number of axillary nodes that are sampled varies from surgeon to surgeon. In my particular case 12 nodes were taken. If you would like an answer from the Dr.s from the cleveland Clinic you might also post your concerns on the other Forum where they answer questions. All the best to your mother.
