What kind of headache is this?

by Josh896, Mar 01, 2008 09:47AM
Hey,
My name is josh and im 17. For about the past year i have been having some strange headaches. They normally come in cluster of 1 or 2 a month then i wont have any for awhile. I like to describe them as a reverse migrain, meaning that light makes as well as standing up and walking around talking to people. The headache gets much much worse when im in the dark and have my eyes shut and its quiet. Also these headaches always come at night and one of the odd characteristics about them is that when i do close my eyes and try to sleep my mind just starts racing frantically and it is impossible to stop it and relax. Also when i shut my eyes i see things repeatedly and the longer i keep them shut, the worse the throbbing gets. I'm not sure what kind of headache this is and I've never heard of anything else like it so if anyone could help that would be great!

It sounds like cluster headaches. I have them also and they are more painful than a migraine at times. Sometimes taking Excredin Migraine can help. But talk to your doctor before taking it if you have breathing problems.

Hi,

Firstly, is there anything that causes you much anxiety lately? You have noted that your headaches usually come when you are about to sleep. Would you be able to attribute this to any constant worries or increased levels of stress lately?

This may appear to be an unusual headache presentation. One may consider here a cluster headache. Cluster headaches as present as sharp stabbing pains that occur for a few seconds. Do you have any associated eye redness or eye tearing? Paroxysmal hemicranias and hemicrania continua are less frequent forms of headaches associated with stabbing pains that lasts for a few seconds and occurs several times a day. Hypnic headaches or headaches that occur when the person sleeps may also be considered.

I suggest that you get a complete assessment done by a neurologist. This does not sound like an urgent case but it is best to have an initial evaluation done.

Just a follow up question, do you snore? Do you wake up at night to catch your breath?
