Thumbsucking

by stepmother008, Mar 02, 2008 03:33PM
I have an 9 year old and she sucks her thumb while watching TV or getting tired or when we drive in the car somewhere.  Would this be from insecurity, I try to mention when she is watching TV or just sitting there to stop and she states I can't help it. How do I resolve this issue before it ruins her teeth?

I too was a thumb sucker.  I started as a baby and I sucked my thumb until I was 21 years old.  Of course not in public, but in my home and at night.  I had a blanket and the whole deal.  When I got married I just did it when he was not home or at night in bed.  I actually stopped when I got pregnant with my first daughter.  I don't know why, or how, I just quit.  I was very sick while pregnant with her so maybe that had something to do with it.  Anyway, sometimes I think about it and have actually put my thumb in my mouth, but not fun anymore!!  LOL  I don't believe it's a security thing, who knows what it is.  I also did not have any trouble with my teeth and trust me, I was dedicated!!!  My mom tried everthing, tabasco, anything nasty she could get on my thumb.  I would just suck it off.  I think if she is not doing it at school or somewhere that someone may tease her, it just may be a comforting thing to her.  I guess personally, it was not a big issue.  Good luck.
