Lung Function Left

by strdsbrg, Mar 02, 2008 03:54PM
When a person says he has a certain percentage of lung function left, to which spirometry value is he referring?  FVC?  FEV1?

It could be referring to either one, depending on whether the lung disease is restrictive (FVC) or obstructive (FEV1).  Be aware, however that there is a wide range of normal values.  Thus the statement is more meaningful when the comparison is between current values and previous values, rather than a comparison of current values with predicted "normals".
