Games to teach self control discipline?

by grandpapa, Mar 03, 2008 10:15AM
My 7 yr old grandson has some problems resultant of split custody and lack of good parenting.  To his credit, he excells in reading and math.  In that regard, he is very smart.  However, he has next to no self discipline as a result of a mother who ignores him all the time.  There is no opportunity for physical activity while he is with his mother.  (She forbids him to go outside and play).  My son lives in our house and he is with us on weekends during which he gets plenty of excersize but may not be enough to make up for the week.

In school (1st grade), his progress reports reflect good reading and math, but poor attention skills, sloppy work and no self discipline.

I am wondering if there isn't some kind of game or activity that won't come across as disciplinary to his actions, yet will foster the areas he is lacking.

Have you found any help in your issue...  I'm asking because I'm having the same issues; my husband and I are divorced and my 6 year old son lives with me but because of having to work FT I have limited time to spend with him in the evenings, I try my best with him, but it's still reflecting at school, he is the most loving child and very smart but he has no self control so in result he has issues with other kids at school and also in school with work, he goes to the school counsellor but this is not seeming to help much; his father isn't the best role model since they play video games all the time or watch TV with wrestling or guns in it...

If any could help with some ideas that would be soooo helpful...
