My son is 12 and pulls his hair out.  We have exhausted the medical community in our immediate area for help.  We know it is trichotelomania (sp?), but have no idea how to help him.  He is entering Jr. High this next year and I fear he will be picked on.  Stress or stressful situations make his pulling worse.  His hair grows back during the summer but he immediatly starts pulling as soon as school starts again.  He started this the middle of 2nd grade he is now in 6th.  Please help.

So sorry that you son is doing this. All I know is that I've been doing it since I was 9 years old and it is a habit that I will have forever. I hate it but I do it all day if I can,You get in a trance and you just do it.I hate hearing others who have because I have the awful job of trying to live my life so no one sees this embarrasing habit. Contact me if you want to know more from me.Goodluck

Trichotillomania is an anxiety issue.  The treatment for anxiety is usually multi-modal - intervention, therapy and perhaps medication.  Have you discussed any of these possibilities with your son's pediatrician?  If necessary, you may require a referral to a specialist with experience in anxiety issues.  I see this question from time to time on the Anxiety forum - have you posted there or posted on the Ask a Doc forum?
