Help..different dr's different diagnosis

by wdsmith37, Mar 07, 2008 11:35AM
In the past 6 months I have had to take my 12 year old daughter to the hospital twice because of difficulties with breathing.  Both times the breathing problems was a sudden onset.  It started with a dry cough then became the barking cough and a short time later she was struggling to get a breath.  The first time, she woke up early in the morning having trouble breathing.  I took her to the doctor and they called an ambulance to transport her to the hospital as her oxygen level was 84.  She was admitted and kept overnight.  She cleared up with breathing treatments and steroids.  This week I rushed her to the hospital again where after being given breathing treatments, steroids, benadryl and morphine her breathing finally improved.  Each time the doctors have given me different diagnosis.  The first ER doctor said she had an allergic reaction.  The second ER doctor told me he thought it was VCD (vocal cord dysfunction syndrome).  My pediatrician disagrees with both doctors and thinks its associated to allergies and asthma although he has not seen her during one of these attacks.  There is a strong family history of asthma.  I am not sure what to do.  These attacks are very scary.  What advice would you give?

I would take your daughter to a specialist, a pediatric pulmonologist would be preferable. That way he or she can then run the right tests including lung function tests, imagining such as CT scanning if necessary etc..
I hope that you get answers soon...it is hard to sort everything out especially when there is conflicting diagnosis. Sunny
