Normal or Abnormal Interest?

by Carlie103, Mar 07, 2008 04:51PM
My son is 13 and very intelligent.  However, he was diagnosed with ADD when he was in 2nd Grade.  He is capable of getting good marks, however, he forgets to had in or complete homework assignments and this carelessness (absent-mindedness) brings his marks down to a "C".  But my big worry right now, is ever since he was 2 (we adopted him at this age), I noticed he was attracted to "sharp" objects.  At 2 he was attracted to sewing needles my mom used.  Now he is attracted to rifles, guns, military armory, and I have found toy guns under his pillow, wood sharpened to points with his boy scout pocket knife, paper clips from his pockets or under his bed unraveled to be long and pointy.  Last week I found a woman's metal (long) nail file under his bed and when I confronted him, he said he found it on the street.  I said, "Don't you know, not to pick up things off the street?  They can be contaminated.  What were you going to do with it?"  He replied, "I was going to file my nails."  To be this was a bunch of bull.  I didn't believe him, but begs the question in my mind, what was he going to do with it, his intent?  Is this normal boyish, ADD behaviour?  This morning I heard my husband arguing with him and I found out, he had a laser gun under his blanket.  My husband confronted him with (again) where did he get it and he said outside.  My husband threw this gun in the garbage can and later asked me to check and make sure my son didn't retrieve it.  It was still in the garbage and this was my first time seeing it.  I was shocked.  I don't think he found it, I think he either stole it or someone gave it to him.  This thing looked like it could be real, plus there was a warning on the gun that said, "For over 18 years of age.  Not to be pointed/used to humans or animals".  Please help.  Is there any really good help/advice for me?  ASAP

My son's school marks haven't improved.  A few weeks ago, in the morning as my son was getting to leave for school, my husband found a knife in my son's pocket.  My son was looking for his asthma inhaler and because he has ADD he forgets things.  Not knowing, it had been in his pocket.  So when my husband said to him to check his pockets, my husband asked him what is this?  My son said it was a pencil.  Of course, he was lying.  My husband then pulled out an illegal knife that was more than 6" long.  My husband got mad and asked him where he got it.  Again my son lied.  He said he got it from camp, but we knew he hadn't been camping with the boyscouts in over a year.  My husband finally got the truth out of him (sort of).  My son said his friend gave it to him.  The both of them saw it in his friend's father's trunk of the car and my son said his friend asked him if he wanted it and my son said sure.  But, when my husband called his friend's mom and then confronted this friend, the friend's story was different from my son's.  The friend said, my son asked him for it.  So my son continued to ly and continues to be fascinated with weapons.  I am really sick of this.  My son was grounded for a weekend.
