17 yo cousin

by MSL4675, Mar 08, 2008 11:38AM
My 17 yo cousin was just diag. with 4th stage pancreatic caner. His mother is not sure what to do. The children's hosptial he is at have not given her much hope. He was there because they thought he had gull stones-his large intestines were swollen. Does anyone have some insightful information?

Hi.  I'm really sorry to hear about your cousin's situation.  To have that kind of illness in someone so young must really be difficult for all of you.  A cure may be out of the question at this point, but I think your cousin can still benefit from palliative treatment.  Some chemotherapy drugs such as gemcitabine can be effective in prolonging survival in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer.  His mother may wish to discuss this option with his oncologist.
