Opiate withdrawl

by Lucylove, Mar 08, 2008 03:14PM
How long does it take to become dependent enough on Vicodin to suffer withdrawl? I was only on them for 3 weeks tops, anywhere from 2-8/day and the 8/day was only twice. Last Vicodin was last night and today I feel depressed, achey, have diarrhea and am sneezing a lot. Is it possible to have become dependent in only 3 weeks of sporadic use? Sporadic meaning usually just in am and pm but sometimes for breakthru pain in afternoon.
Thanks.

Those sound like the typical symptoms, but I'm unsure if you can become dependent on that short of time....?????others will answer I'm sure....

Hello,

Are you an RN or LPN? The human body can become physically dependent on Vicodin in a realtively short period of time especially if you meet one or all of the requirements of a person who is at risk of dependence. Do you meet any of the following?

1. Past history (including family members) of dependent tendancies including alcohol.
2. Taking more of the medication than necessary in order to experience the euphoria.
3. History of opiate usage.

Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone!
Yeah, I'm an alcoholic in recovery and after weeks of trying to tolerate this new pain I finally was instructed by my dr's to take Vicodin. Boy did it f--k w/my head. I was always taking it as prescribed, never over, in fact always less, but I counted my pills, I looked forward to taking it, I waited for it to "hit" and kick in. It was totally alcoholic of me. I had surgery to relieve the pain last week & the pain is gone! It's awesome. I finished the Vicodin last night in another alcoholic way, but I couldn't wait to have them GONE, out of my house, my life. At the same time loving them.

I'm sure I'm doing some of the psychological stuff to myself but what got me was the sneezing & diarrhea. So random & of course defintite signs of w/drawl.

I'm feeling sleezy and shameful and depressed. Send me love!! I'm so lucky my pain was temporary and I'm so lucky I have health insurance that paid for the surgery (I think).

Thanks for having a place for me to write this out,
lucylove

The withdrawal symptoms you are describing are severe, but I suppose it varies from person to person. The first time I ever took Vicodin was for wisdom teeth surgery and that was for two weeks. When I ran out, I psychologically missed them and was tempted to ask for more, but decided against it. I did get a bit depressed for a few days, but just endured it.

Anyway, it would be later down the line when I started getting plastic surgeries that the real issues started.

My suggestion is that you take some non drowsy sudafed or benadryl and just deal with it. You do not want a staggering problem with opiates.

Right on. Thanks.
I have no intention of trying to get more pills. Just humbled once again.

Thanks everyone

hang in there. As everyone has stated..You absolutely can get physically addicted to them in a short time. just weeks. I was an alcoholic for about 1 1/4 years. it just happened while i was going through w/ds from methadone. I quit drinking about 3 months ago after a blackout but i also was taking ALOT of vicodin too. Either way I quit drinking and I am going on my 5thday of w/d to vicodin. I will add you to my prayers. Anytime you'd like to message me..feel free. i was reading through some of your stuff. It's time for me to start giving back to all these wonderful people here..who saved my life! Lisa
