how can chewing/splitting an Oxy pill cause death?

by Starbuck49, Feb 01, 2007 12:00AM
I was reading the  5 mg. Oxycodone ( plain)  info sheet I have, and saw  instructions online also about how chewing or  spliting the time release pills   cause death by overdose.

If I am only taking one 5 MG pil..and I cut it in half..how can  that cause  death? I know it is time released,  so he meds enter the blddstream faster, but death?   is this a scare tactic?

If people here are taking ( as I think I have read)  20mg to 80mg  Oxy pills @ 5-20 pills a day ...  are they risking death?   has anyone died from chewing the pills?

Can someone explain this?

I have heard some people snort crushed Oxy it, or inject it,  now tht seems scarey.

but swallowing  even a  crushed or bitten pill puts it thru the digestive system... so absorbtion is  slowed I thought.

oxys are time release so by chewing or cutting them breaks up their integrity. By chewing them release all the opioid at once plus goes under your tongue. Hi I'm rock or Joe what ever you choice.

It also depends on your metabolism and your bodies defenses against oxy as well as other pills. Every person is different. Where i might not get an averse reaction to chewing the pill or crushing it etc. Someone else may have a toxic reaction to it. No one can honestly say how it will react on any individual. Every drug, and that includes over the counter stuff as well, has a potential to kill or severly incapacitate. Don't sell any drug short.

The pill is designed to deliver a specific amt of medication over 12 hours.  once the coating on the pill is broken, you get all that medication at once.  Now, just because some on here are taking 80, 120mg- they didn't start there?  I am up to taking 9 Norco (lortab 10mg) at a time every 3 hours a day. Does that mean if you take that, you wouldn't stop breathing?  I doubt it. If i would have started at that, i would have been soooo sick and maybe even dead.   We build a tolerance to what we are taking so it affects us differently.  If you need something that is not as strong, talk to your doctor.  But taking it the way you are can lead to abuse, because you get a high from the release of all that medicaiton at once-and you begin to LIKE IT!  If you don't need the long acting, get something less strong-but try to get off of it quickly or you could end up with a bad addiction down the road.

It is good to read that you will never take one again..Yes it can make you die. It affects your respiratory system, among other things, with breaking the time release you  unleashed the med all at once into your blood stream on top of the 1 you took that is still releasing the med over time.. Most that take lg. amount of meds build up a tolerance over time.. Only use med as prescribed... Take care
