pain relief help???

by rubyj, Mar 09, 2008 02:10PM
I have a bulging disc in my neck, and lower back, due to a car accident.  I am having a spasm, or pinched nerve in my neck right now, and am going crazy with the pain.  My doctor prescribed me 2 narcotic pain killers, vicoden, and valume, both of which, do nothing to help.  I have been asking for somthing else, to get me thru this pain, until my treatment with the chiropractor is easier on me. i have a very high pain tolerance, and tolerance for everything else. I have been applying ice, and have myself hooked up to a tens unit.  does anyone else have any suggestions?  i am looking for a good narcotic, or homeopathic, just somthing to get me thru this, as i am having a really hard time.... please help!

Thanks....pam

You might ask for Lyrica which is used for nerve pain.  generally diabetic neuropathy or fibromyalgia.  You might ask for a different muscle relaxant.  valium was probably given for spasms but it is also a sedative.  There is flexaril or zanaflex.  Of course there are tons of different pain meds available as well.  I don't know your personal medical history.  This is all something that you need to discuss with your physician.  The most important thing is to let him or her know that what he has prescribed is not working for you.  It could be indicative of a more severe situation.  Or what he has prescribed is just not right for your body.  Everybody metabolizes medications in different ways.

You might also try arnica.  It is a homeopathic substance that works great for strains and decreasing swelling and inflammation from injuries.  I used it after surgery once and the doctor couldn't get over how little I bruised and swelled.  It may not do a whole lot for you if it's been a while since you were injured but it's a good thing to keep on hand.
