HSV Diagnosis through Western Blot &

by brightstar7, Mar 09, 2008 03:21PM
I will deeply appreciate Dr. Hunter Handsfield's response. I sent a post last night, but unfortunately didn't find it today - apologies for duplicate if so.
I am currently outside the US (in Mexico) and have been offered either ‘Western Blot’ or”Torch profile-IgG” to diagnose either HSV1 and/or HSV2. Am a straight woman, 35, zero pregnancies, sexually active at 20yrs old, always had protected sex except for three other men apart from partners “A” & “B”, but some condoms failed in the past years. Facts are as follows:
October 2006: Stopped relationship with partner “A” after 1 year of unprotected sex. He was HIV negative.
Late Dec. 2006: I tested HIV negative.
Sept. 2007: Had unprotected sex various times with partner “B”.
Late Oct. 2007: Partner “B” had a bad cold sore before we broke up by then.
Late Nov. 2007: both partner “B” & I tested HIV negative. Had unprotected sex for the last time.
27  Jan.- 2 Feb 08: had protected sex once with partner “C”, but touched each other’s genitals and gave each other oral sex.
7 Feb 08: Pap smear results showed only what looked like “a bacteria together with a fungus” to ‘gynecologist  1’, who prescribed Clindamycin ovules (‘Trexen’). Colposcopy showed no HPV.
9 Feb 08: had protected sex once with partner “C”, but also touched each other’s genitals and gave each other oral sex.
10 Feb 08: started treatment for bacteria with ovules for 4 nights(out of prescribed 6).
14 Feb 08: got early period – thus stopped ovule. Had slept little, under stress; started feeling sore while urinating.
16 Feb 08: went to ‘gynaecologist 2’ diagnosed herpes outbreak. Said that tests would take at least 5 days before prescribing, and given the pain, I asked for a prescription (no HerpeSelect  or quick diagnose method available); she Prescribed Rivabirin (‘Vilona’) and Acyclovir spray (terribly painful). Got fever, swollen ganglion, terrible pain to urinate & bad white discharge. Symptoms just got worse –38 small visible ulcers on both labia majora & minora.
18 Feb 08: called epidemiologist, who prescribed oral acyclovir 200mg every 8hrs, together with fenazopiridine 500mg every 12hrs. The later definitely eased the burning feeling to urinate, and taking Acyclovir 400mg every 8 hours (by mistake instead of 200mg), symptoms went down to 50% in 36 hrs.
26 Feb 08: white discharge certainly decreased but continued, epidemiologist prescribed a single Isoconazole ovule (‘Icaden’).
28 Feb 08: discharge still shown; epidemiologist prescribed Nitrofurazone (‘Furacin’) every 12 hrs for 5 days.
29 Feb.08: Completed the Acyclovir course for a total of 11 days.
1st March 08: labia itchiness got really bad; epidemiologist prescribed Myconazole cream 3 times a day for 10 days (while completing Nitrofurazone course).
3 March – to present: I’ve developed some itchiness on my spine, with only 3-4 tiny spots, no blisters shown, besides of some occasional tingling on right ear. I wonder if the latter two symptoms could be HSV related and what is the best way to be diagnosed. I’ve read as much as possible on HSV 1-2 (recengly HHV3-8), I’ve avoided high arginine foods, focusing on high lysine foods, plus good sleep and stress management. My questions now are:
1. From what I describe, would there be any slight chance that I have something that is not HSV? Could Clindamycin ovules give such out break related to something else?
2. Given that partners B and C were the only men I had been out with having a history of cold sores, would it be right to suspect on HSV1 only?
3. My core questions are: are Western Blot / Torch profile-IgG the right tests to diagnose either HSV1 and/or HSV2? How long after the outbreak and treatment should either/or be taken?
4. I would like to get a confirmation on HIV negative - is Western Blot the most reliable to do so? Would HSV outbreak and treatment show a false negative HIV test?
5. Given the range that W.Blot covers HHV 1-8, would you recommend in my case to be tested for HHV 5 (cytomegalovirus), HHV 6 (I was diagnosed with CFS in 2003) and perhaps HHV 8 also?
6. What would you suggest to totally get rid of Chlamydia, if possible?
Thanks SO MUCH in advance for your responses, they will be absolutely helpful.
