Low BP dure to inefficiency?

by afib101, Mar 09, 2008 07:52PM
63 yr old male had first A-Fib on recent routine medical.  BP is generally 91/75. bpm 100.  Is this truly low BP as in "good" or "bad" because is it a manisfestation of the A-Fib inefficiency resulting in low output? I am asymptomatic.

2dn Q- Are home BP monitors accurate in regard to A-Fib? The manual says a shaking heart symbol is displayed when 2 or more beats are 25% below or above in  length relative to the average of others.  Does this jive with an EKG definition?

Sorry I can't help with the first question. About the second question: my home BP monitor has the shaking heart symbol. I have seen it quite a few times when I am absolutely sure I was not in Afib. I don't know if you have ever noticed this before, but in many (most?) people, the heart rate increases and decreases during respiration - this is called respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA). This can be quite pronounced with me sometimes and that must be what triggers the shaking heart icon. Having one or more ectopic beats while checking your BP might trigger it also. It is a useful feature but I think it scares people with Afib (like me) unnecessarily. Checking your pulse immediately should help determine whether or not you are in Afib.
