Tethered cord, thoracic myelopathy

by sigrid50, Mar 10, 2008 06:04PM
My name is Heather.  My mom has tethered cord and thoracic myelopathy.   She had a staphylococcal infrection at 10 years old, had a thoracic laminectomy, and another back surgery at 18 years old.  Over the last few years, her neurological deficits have been worsening.  Her current treatment is pain management, but her neurological deficits are worsening.  After getting an MRI within the last year her only surgical option is to redo thoracic laminectomy with spinal cord detethering.  Although her neurosurgeon is caring and continues to check on mom, I feel that 57 years old is too young to undergo this surgery with a high risk of the "redo" with the detethering is paraplegia and probably complete paralysis.

MRI results indicated: cervical spine showed minimal spondylitic; lumbar spine showed mild degenerative spine disease of the lower lumbosacral segment;  thoracic spine showed small amount of syringomyelia; spinal myelomalacia and tethered cord at the level of the mid spine from T7 or T8 down to T10; the rest of the toracic spine is normal.

Does anyone have any options???????
