Lab test results following pituitary microadenoma diagnosis

by tnusokr14, Mar 10, 2008 06:24PM
I am desperate for answers. i am 24F & i feel as though my doc has rush thru this incidently bc (as his nurse said) they have been busy. I requested a copy of my results 3 wks after tests were taken and i was re-assured TWICE that they had just recieved them. I just happened to glance atthe papers and i notice that my results were sent back only days after my blood work was taken (Feb12)... anyhow, i am seeking a second opinion bc the nurse told me we'll have a follow up in 6 months. I struggle through each and every day. i will first start with my results and then will add a list of symptoms i feel daily. i'd like to ad that i am not on BCP, but am taking amitriptiline and Neurontin (unsure if that is necessary)

cortisol 8.9
growth hor 1.63
ACTH 10.1
FSH 5.7
Free t4 1.30
LH 11.4
Prolactin 5.0
TSH 0.94

Symptoms are as such: loss libido, daily throbbing headaches in BACK of head and sharp in front occassionally, sleep problems (cannot stay asleep and most recently can't fall asleep either), frequent nighttime urination, blurry vision, pimples, muscle weakness, hair loss, DIZZY (bad!), appetite decrease (I blame it on my meds...) twice dealth with discharge from nipples, irregular heavy periods. I had my son in Nov '05 and ppl always associated my "symptoms" with having just had a child. I just want answers and want to get back to my normal life. i have been going through this for long enough. any tips/advice will help. the dizzy spells and the headaches are what keeps me down the most. thanks guys.

Hi. I am sorta in the same boat as you. I am seeing my doctor tonight to get test results back that were done because a problem with my pituitary is suspected. I have done some reading about this, and it definately sounds like something is going on with your yours. It is very typical to have milk discharge from breasts when you have a problem with your prolactin levels.  I don't know if the dr/nurse lied about the test results not coming back in time or not, but don't dwell on that. It's not important now. The fact that your doctor checked all the hormones secreted by the anterior pituitary gland is great, but a follow up in 6 months is ridiculous!  I do not know the "normal" levels of these tests, but it looks like your tsh and t4 are low. This is the problem in my case. I have low tsh and low t4. The doctor said my pituitary gland is not sending the right messages, so he ran tests only on my cortisol levels (ACTH). I have  a lot of the same symptoms as you except for the nipple discharge and my periods are normal (every 26-28 days), but very heavy. If I were you I would make that appt with this doctor for the 6 mos, but I would immediately take my test results and go to another endocrinologist. (you saw an endo, right? They deal with hormones). I would also bring up the idea to the doctor to have an MRI done. From what I have read, it seems your thyroid and prolactin levels are off. I do not know much about the other glands yet, but I am waiting to find out what my problem is. Once I know, I will do some major reading about it. That's just how I am.
Like I said, I see my doctor tonight, and if he doesn't mention having an MRI, I'm going to. I have read that the most probable cause for a pituitary disorder is a tumor (benign). It can really mess up your hormones.
Keep me posted,
Karly

Hi! I am a 39 years old female, i discovered a pituitary microadenoma 2 years ago. I am treated with  dostinex. 2 years ago, prolactin rate was 186 ( ref range 1-30). it began to decrease with treatment, then, at beginning of this year 2008, it increased  from 63 to 90 as i had some cold & took medicine, then in march it decreased to 80, this month (june 2008) it is 129! i took no medicine and nothing was abnormal. anybody has any idea what may have caused this?
