Vesicoureteral Reflux with enlarged bladder and now Vesicostomy

by wen13, Mar 10, 2008 09:36PM
My daughter was diagnosed with Vesicoureteral Reflux Grade 5 at 6 weeks of age. She has duplicate ureters on both sides.  All four were reimplanted with surgery at a 5 months of age.  She continued to get urinary tract infections after surgery.  At another VCUG, they discovered that she still had Grade 5 VUR, the surgery had not helped.  After another infection, a urodynamics test was performed this week (10 months old now).  Her bladder pressure was good, but the bladder was enlarged to at least twice its normal size.  Voiding was much better than expected, but they do not seem to know what is causing the infections or the VUR.  The doctors want to do a vesicostomy and leave it in for 18 months to help her heal and see how growth affects her system.  Is this the best way to keep her healthy or should we be more aggressive in looking for a cause?   This all seems very drastic to us, but the doctors seem to think this is the best answer.  Should we get a second opinion?

My daughter had a similar operation in May. She's still taking antibiotics. I hope she doesn't develop infections again after she stops taking them. I wonder about whether the vesicostomy can give bladder spasms. My daughter had dreaful spams after the operation. You can read our experience here: http://ureteralreimplant.wordpress.com
