joint pain

by mecca75, Mar 11, 2008 08:00AM
I have joint pain in my knees and elbows, weakness in knees after kneeling down and trying to stand up.  I have numbness that comes and goes in my feet.  My chemo/raidiation  treatments ended a year ago.  Are these aches and pains caused by the after effects of the drugs and radiation?  I also have trouble taking antibiotics or pain meds.  I seems to get every side effect listed.  Alcohol of any type bothers me also.  I use to enjoy a glass of wine but no longer.

Hi,

You need to consult your oncologist or doctor and get a bone scan done at the earliest.

You would probably need calcium supplements, vitamin D and bisphosphonates.

What chemotherapy were you taking and for what cancer?

Consult an orthopedician too.

Let us know about what your doctors advise and about your reports.

Regards.

Thanks for your response.  I'm am being seen by my oncologist every 3 months.  Since December I've had a bone scan, MRI, and a CT.  Everything looks good.  I had radiation weekly with carboplatin(sp)  for 8 weeks and cisplatin and taxol for 12 weeks. My last treatment was a year ago, Feb. 14th.  I had 3rd stage endometrial cancer.  I'm 57 years old and hope to get on with my life.  Do I need a higher dose of vitamin D than the daily requirement?

Hi,

You should in fact talk to your doctor about calcium and vitamin D supplements.

If your scans and other investigations are normal, and you are following up regularly, then you can discuss this with your oncologist and ask him/her whether you need to see an orthopedician.

Take some pain relief medications and try hot fomentation and see if it helps.

Keep us posted.

Regards.
