Do you mean yorkshire terrier (yorkie)?  If so, I have 2, both males, and their personalities couldn't be more different, so that really varies depending on the dog.  Both are good with kids, but one is really mellow and laid back and the other is super hyper.  One was easy to train and the other is very stubborn and difficult to train.  Both are good with other animals.  As for food, that is a personal choice.  One of mine has a very sensitive stomach (common in the breed), so I tend to stick with higher quality pet food from the pet store.  I hope this helps!

I'll bet he's just adorable!  I have to say, though, that I CRINGED when I read that you are feeding him Kibbles and Bits.  PLEASE get him off that food!  It's the equivalent of doggie junk food.  He would do much better on a good quality puppy food.  A premium food is going to be much more costly than Kibbles and Bits, but a Yorkie is so tiny, a 5 pound bag will probably last him forever because he'll only need about 1/4 cup of premium food at a feeding.  The "bits" in Kibbles and Bits (the soft moist parts) are kept soft and moist by the addition of propylene glycol, which is a chemical that has been suggested to be a cause of kidney failure in dogs and cats.  In an occasional treat it's not a problem, but as a daily part of the diet it's not such a great idea.  As I said, the premium foods can get quite costly, but even a better grocery brand like Purina O.N.E. Puppy Food would be great for him.

Yes, I agree with BIGMAMA about the Kibbles and Bits...its like feeding your child the sugariest and least nutritional cereal!  Yeah, it tastes good, but hasn't much nutritional value.  Also, it is a good idea to start him soon on a nutritious formula because you don't want him to get used to Kibbles and Bits (which is probably tastier than the "good food".

Would you rather Shreaded Wheat or Captain Crunch?????  LOL

i got him on purina now he loves it  our cat even tries to eat his food  thanx for the help can you cut there toe nails your self?

Sure, you can cut your dog's nails yourself, but it would be a good idea to have your vet or a groomer demonstrate how to do it correctly before trying to do so yourself.  There is a blood line that runs through the nail that is easily seen in light-colored nails.  With dark nails, it's nearly impossible to see the quick, making it easier to nick it when you clip.  If you cut into that vein, it hurts the dog, opens up the area to germs and infection, and the bleeding can be quite spectacular and messy.

Your vet or groomer can show you the correct way to clip the nails and recommend the proper tools to use.  In the meantime, start getting your pup used to having you handle his feet.  Most dogs get uncomfortable having their paws held and stroked.  Any time you're hanging out with him, just do a little paw-stroking and petting with lots of praise when he doesn't object, and you shouldn't have any trouble when it comes to nail trimming time.  Acceptance of having paws handled is also a requirement for the AKC Canine Good Citizenship program, which is a fabulous course I recommend to any dog owner.  For more info on the CGC certification program, check out this link:
