Your vet or groomer can show you the correct way to clip the nails and recommend the proper tools to use. In the meantime, start getting your pup used to having you handle his feet. Most dogs get uncomfortable having their paws held and stroked. Any time you're hanging out with him, just do a little paw-stroking and petting with lots of praise when he doesn't object, and you shouldn't have any trouble when it comes to nail trimming time. Acceptance of having paws handled is also a requirement for the AKC Canine Good Citizenship program, which is a fabulous course I recommend to any dog owner.
