Optic Neuritis

by BK995, Mar 12, 2008 05:41PM
Can alcoholism cause optic neuritis?  I have drank on average of 12 beers per day for just over 10 years.  I was diagnosed by an opthalmologist as having optic neuritis just over a week ago.  MRI of brain showed a couple of lesions.  Neurologist I saw didn't seem to think the lesions were necessarily multiple sclerosis, but suspicious.  Spine MRI was okay.  My blood work has come back okay.  B12 level is fine.  Scheduled for spine tap in two days.  I do have a very slight sensitive sensation in the tips of my fingers.  I told the neurologist about the drinking, but he didn't ask how much and at the time I didn't think it was important.  Believe it or not, I appear to be in pretty good health and run over 20 miles per week.

Again, could the alcoholism caused the optic neuritis?  Should I see another sub specialist?  Thanks for your help.
