my daughter is now nine, she has had poor speech and poor motor skills from age 3.She had speech therepy and occupational therapy until she went to school.
by age 6 & 7 she was having behaviour problems at shool and falling behind. She couldn't cope with groups of kids, she liked to have one friend and tried to "own " that friend and would get angry, upset and emotional if that friend left her to play with other children. She started displaying self mutelating behaviour such as picking scratching into her skin, biting herself, making herself bleed. She saw a counciler at the school, who thought she needed further testing. The school would not get her tested because she was not below her academic level.I proceeded to get her tested through a child phycometric testing centre.
She was accually delayed for her age accademically and socially. They said she had ADHD and hyperlexia.they said she would need further testing, but at $450 per testing,it's quite a lot to ask when we still don;t know exactly. We do not medicate her at all.
She reads and spells well but her comprehension is poor. She enjoys maths but has difficulties with some aspects. She can remember numbers, phone number ect really well.

see if you can get the counselor to write a reffeal letter to the school administration fo an m-team evaluation.  The school must do the eval free of charge.

if the counselor won't write the refferal, you can do it.  Just outline your concerns and then  ask for an m-team (multi-disciplinary team)  evaluation and sign and date it.

Then set your stopwatch for 90 days.

the counselor wrote a referal to her pediatrician 2 years ago.Even her pediatrician has spoke to the principal in person in regards to my daughter, and had strongly recomended that she needed changes in the classroom to accommadate her needs. It's a private school and they claim they can't get funding for her cause she doesn't fit into their category. This year i stepped in and saw the lady who goes around the schools and does the testing of kids. She has spoken and observed my daughter and agrees, but the principal said cause we are leaving the school at end of term, they will not pay for it..

try to get her  pediatrician to do this in writing and ask for an m-team evaluation.  I'm not sure how it goes for private schools, but public schools are guided by federal IDEA law.

I gotta admit I know little about  private schools and federal accountability.  That's what I thought No Child Left Behind was suposed to address.

I dunno if the NCLB law opens up funding for private schools to comply with IDEA but that's something the school could get some kinda grant or something.  I know they are always looking for ways of raising funds.
