Wisdom Tooth pain

by Coradee, Mar 14, 2008 08:23AM
Over the last few months my upper right wisdom tooth has been coming in slowly. It will move a little, then stop for weeks at a time. Up until now this hasn't been problem. The tooth itself caused only minimal discomfort, and the surrounding area was unaffected. However, the most recent tooth movement is a completely different story. My wisdom tooth is cutting the back of my cheek, and causing me quite a bit of pain. The tooth itself still doen't hurt, just the surrounding area. Also there's a minor discomfort in the back of my mouth, almost like I'm getting sore throart. And it's getting slightly difficult to swallow.

Should I have the tooth removed? Or is this just a normal part of a wisdom tooth coming in? I would like to avoid surgery if I could, but I'm not sure if this problem will go away by itself, or if it will worsen with time.

And if I do choose surgery, is local anethesia my only option? Or could I be asleep for the procedure?

Extraction of upper wisdom tooth is generally under local anestheia and completed very shortly. There is usually minimal amount of  post-op pain.
