Just diagnosed

by tunicalady, Mar 15, 2008 01:07AM
I am 43 and was just diagnosed this week with PCOS.  I am still in shock.  Actually my case seems to be different from what I am reading.  I have thyroid disease.  My thyroid starting giving me problems right after I delivered my youngest child (I have two boys with six years difference between them).  Anyway, I also have endometriosis (this was diagnosed on laparoscopy twice).  My youngest is 11, so for the past 11 years, the doctors have not been able to regulate my thyroid.  Most of the time I am pretty severely hypothyroid.  Also, I have been wanting another baby.  My GYN told me that in order to try for that baby my thyroid needed to be straightened out...so, for the last almost year, my family doc has been working on adjusting my medications.  She finally got frustrated and sent me to an endocrinologist.  It was totally amazing.  My endocrinologist asked a couple of questions and did an exam.  Upon her exam and with the questions, she said that she was noticing signs of PCOS.  I had heard of this but thought that it was something I would have surely been diagnosed with earlier in life.  She ran the blood work, and all of my blood work came back positive for this.  I have high testosterone, slightly increased glucose and my thyroid labs showed still signs of being hypo even though I take 175 mcg of Synthroid.  The reason I say mine is sorta different is because while I have had cysts on my ovaries constantly (not in clusters), I don't seem to have the multicysts like most women have.  My endo says they have learned that the labs alone can diagnose someone, and you don't have to have the cysts to have the diagnosis.  Anyway, I am being started on Metformin.  Can I get some feedback regarding side effects and success rate of pregnancy from anybody who has been started on this?

I know how you feel. I was just diagnosed today with PCOS. I am really sad about it. I have a 3 year old boy. It bums me out that getting pregnant again my never happen again. IVF is not the way I would want to have a baby. I do not have thyroid issues, but testosterone is high and glucose. My doctor said that just by looking at me he could tell things were not right. The ultrasound confirmed the diagnosis.

I start Meformin in 3 weeks, I started my birth control last week. Is there a birth control that is right for PCOS? just curious. Hang in there, let me know how things go. i would like to hear the same answers as tunicalady.... Thank you for helping! have a wonderful day.
