Concerned about lump on penis

by CaliChrons, Mar 16, 2008 02:05PM
I've noticed this awhile back, that there is a lump on my penis when it's erected, the height size of 1/2 a pea, but the width is about 1/2 inch. It is also under the skin and  painless when touched or when pressure is applied.  I noticed this back when I was 16, and I am now 25.  The lump does not appear when it's flaccid and I cannot feel it at all. Something that might be unrelated to the lump that I noticed  is a purple dark flat discoloration on my penis, the size of pencil eraser with irregular borders. It does not itch, bleed, or have an ulceration of some sort. I've had the splotch for about 5 months now and it hardly has any texture.

When I go to doctors, how do I go about showing the lump when the penis is erect. This is very uncomfortable situation for me, do I'm not sure what to do. Do any of these problems sound like penile cancer. I am circumcised and I have live in the US, but I am also sexually active with no STD (herpes, syphilis) I've taken blood test a few months ago. So I am also concerned that it might be discoloration might be HPV. This is stuff that I seen on the  net. Should I have a referral to get an MRI or ultrasound?

First of all, none of this sounds like penile cancer!
The soft lump that you describe with an erection sounds like a dilated vein. It is most prominent when the blood flow to your penis is greatest. You do not need to demonstrate this to your urologist, just describe it as you succinctly did above.
The flat discoloration does need a physician's opinion. I would recommend going to a dermatologist or urologist and doing that soon (within a week or two) as there are skin cancers that can occur here, as they can anywhere that there is skin. Certainly many men have areas of hyperpigmentation (increased color) on their penises but my concern is that this is fairly new and has an irregular border. HPV causes little cauliflower like growths, or sometimes raised somewhat firm areas (different than the irregularities that occur all over penile skin).
Please do follow up on this one.

Wow, I had no idea that skin cancer can occur on the penis. I plan to go see a Dr. after my new insurance kicks in. I forgot to mention that my old doctor looked at it about 5 months ago and he looks like busted blood vein, but it's been quite some time since then and hasn't gone away. Can a broken blood vessels occur on the penis for more than 6 months and do they usually look like a splotch?

I too have a similar lump but its not on but in the penis, near the head and right on a vein. Sometimes I can feel it without an erection but is much easier to feel when I have one. Like you, it hasn't given me any grief and hasn't grown. I too was circumsized when I was very young and I'm only 30.
