Ketones

My daughter has ketones in her urine. She has biabetes 1. Her blood sugar has been maintaing within the range of 60 to 175. She has had fever recently and coughing a lot. She does not have much appetite.
Why did the ketones appear in the urine. Is thre any connection between the fever and the ketones? Thanks.

Some kids do have ketones when they are sick. Her usual control sounds very good. I would recommend that you give her lots of liquids to avoid dehydration, keep a close eye on the blood sugars and ketones and if they don't go away in a couple of days, call her doctor. As long as her glucose levels are not running high, it doesn't sound like anything really serious. Hopefully just being sick with the fever.
