Vitamin D Deficiency...or so I thought...

by winutah, Mar 18, 2008 10:45PM
To make a long story short:

May '07 - Developed a case of "trench mouth" or Vincent's Gingivitis. Antibiotics cleared it up.

Aug '07 - Developed a long-standing sinus infection (never had a sinus infection before)

Sep -07 - Late in that month got a little head cold (pretty typical for me around this time)

Nov '07 - Got a cold again in late November (not necessarily typical...I usually get one cold a year)

Dec '07 - Stomach ulcer (or what felt like one) started developing. Nausea for two weeks...lots of gas. Noticed slight tingling and numbness in arms and hands. Also had extreme muscle fatigue. I couldn't hold a phone to my ear for longer than several seconds. Overall fatigue wasn't an issue but had a few days around xmas where I was exhausted. Finally got antibiotics to clear up sinus infection and also found out I was vit D deficient (<7ng/ml) which made sense since I was remodeling a house and have spent the vast majority of the last 3 years indoors.

Jan '08 - A few days after taking antibiotics I started having muscle pain in random parts of my body. I figured out the tingling in my hands was caused by some compression of the ulnar nerve back at my shoulder blades. Nothing extreme but it was there. Gradually the intensity of the pain went away but I started to devlop right knee pain. Along with that I noticed my muscles overall had lost their density. I could lean forward with my elbows on my thighs and it would feel like my elbows were hitting my femur. The pads of my feet suddenly felt "thin" and it was hard to stand in one place. My PCP (former now) was an idiot and just prescribed 400IU of D...I knew better and started tanning lightly and taking 2000UIs of D3 daily.

Feb '08 - Started feeling better. My arms (especially my left) made significant improvement. My ulcer, which had been bothering me since December gradually went away but it does bother me occasionally. I had hope I was on the road to recovery.

Mar '08 - A week or so after stopping tanning I hit another wall. Muscle fatigue constantly throughout the day. This lasted for over a week. I was tested after about 6 weeks of supplementing and my D was up to 32 ng/ml. Around that time another doc put me on 50,000IU daily (we both hadn't received this last test result but felt that my original number would need more supplementing anyway). 3 days on the supplement and my knee pain started to lift. 10 days later I had to stop because I was getting headaches but oddly enough my right arm began to improve and I had more energy. The only thing is that I get more episodes of feeling weak now and my feet still feel "thin" and it's hard to stand still.

I just got my 3rd D test result back and it was 76 ng/ml. I'm stopping all supplementing. I feel better but I'm not back to normal. My knee does hurt a bit depending on how much I use it. I overall feel muscle fatigue and am more tired than usual. The muscle pain has been gone for a couple of weeks now.

I did the ELISA for Lyme and it, of course, came back negative. I don't feel like this isn't Lyme given my lifestyle and lack of outdoor activities. I do know my EBV titer for "reactiviation" is 2700. I was tested for MS which was negative.

So my big question is....with my levels back to normal, does it just take some time for my body to readjust to the change. With those megadoses daily over the course of 10 days, is my body just trying to gain a foothold? I honestly felt improvements when I supplemented.
