Weight question

by wegster, Mar 19, 2008 08:31AM
Hi all,

It seems that I'm not the norm when it comes to diabetes as I have problems gaining weight. I'm a 37 y/o male and weigh 145lbs. Besides working out, do you have any Idea how I can gain weight? All the foods that most people use to bulk up are what I'm supposed to avoid.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
This is indeed an unusual request. Do you have Type 1 DM, and how well is your diabetes controlled? If your diabetes is not well controlled this could be the cause of your not being able to gain weight.  If you have Type 1 diabetes, you may also be at risk for other diseases that can contribute to poor weight gain, like Celiac disease.

The other question is, why do you want to gain weight?
You can some nutrient dense foods like nuts which have good fats and proteins without too high a carb load as part of your diet. Weight bearing exercise is great as a general rule. Meeting with a dietician may be very helpful in this situation.
Take care.

Thanks for your response. I have type 2. My last HA1c was 8.1 and I am now using Janumet. I do suppose a dietitian is the right way to go. Thanks again.

I am a Lean Type 2 as well!!!!!!!  It is so nice to finally find someone else out there that has this problem!  I am moderately active and can not gain weight!  I have been tested for every known malady out there it seems.  I, however, did not respond to oral medications and even with higher than average readings, my HA1c was 6.1.   They have put me on insulin, though, and it seems to help me more than the orals.  How have you responded to the orals?  I tried Janumet but it didn't help much- infact- it really messed up my sugar - like a rebound effect or something.   Have you been tested for malnutrition issues?  Or wasting diseases?
Hope all goes well...
